Burnt River Farms was founded in 2016 by Shawn McKay and Guss Young with a small team of just five employees in the town of Huntington, Oregon. Huntington is a small town on the western end of the Treasure Valley in Eastern Oregon. Huntington is the ideal location to produce cannabis due to its high desert, low precipitation climate and jet silt loam soil. The Treasure Valley has a climate and elevation very similar to Central Asia around modern-day Afghanistan where cannabis is thought to have originated.
After finding the perfect location to build a cannabis farm the Burnt River Farms team kicked into action. The team spent the first 6 months clearing the land and building the soil in preparation to plant the first crop in the summer of 2016. The first couple of years were spent building critical infrastructure. This included bringing in power and water as well as building drying sheds and greenhouses to begin the process of establishing a sustainable growing operation that focused on the preservation of their world class genetics and large-scale production of cannabis.
World Class Genetics
The team started with just 4-5 strains and today the farm boasts over 50 of the highest quality strains of craft cannabis Oregon has to offer. The team continues to cultivate new strains of genetics in an attempt to seek out the cultivars that are best adapted to our environment and nutrient program, in turn allowing us to provide to you the consumer, a superior quality cannabis product.
Site development started on the farm in 2016 along the historic Oregon trail on an abandoned railroad site, through extensive site restoration and rehabilitation, Burnt River farms managed to establish Eastern Oregon’s first legal marijuana grow facility. What started with a small team of just 4 or 5 employees grew to be over 50 employees today with more than 75 years of combined experience in the cannabis industry. Burnt River Farms now harvests over 2500 pounds of cannabis per season. In addition to multiple greenhouses and large outdoor fields the farm has more than 10,000 s.f. of space dedicated to drying and processing, along with a fully equipped extraction facility, commercial kitchen and packaging facility. The addition of the farm to the small town of Huntington has provided some of the only local job opportunities and a much needed boost to the local economy.
Burnt River Farms plans to continue to grow over the coming years and will continue to invest in the people and local economy in Huntington, Ontario and the surrounding Treasure Valley. We are committed to reviving this once thriving community to its full potential today and into the future. We hope to see you soon at our dispensary in Ontario, Oregon where you can find all of the amazing products our team produces along with a curated selection from producers from across the state of Oregon.
